Antique box apparently was a carrying or stock box for Jersey Axes. Of course, these contents required a sturdy box!
Box is very solid and sturdy, and has a rope handle. Wood is in antique condition and has not been retouched.
Lettering on the outside says, " Nelson Howe Co., Roanoke, VA" on one side, "Double Life" on one side, "Jersey Axes" on one side, "STRT. HDLS", probably meaning 'straight handles' on one side, and 1/2 Doz. 3 1/2 S. B. Jersey Axes Dreadnaught" on the bottom.
This would be a great box to hold items on your desk, to hold condiments or silverware for an outdoor dinner, or for a casual flower arrangement.
